I have always found this picture haunting. Especially when I found out the story behind it. This woman was actually younger than I am now. She looks 20 years older! Her clothes are literally in tatters, her children are totally depending on her, and she has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Yet, she looks determined to work it out. I don't sense that she feels hopeless, just downtrodden. It is nice to know she survived, all these kids did too, and she ended up living a better life.
